Answering with the need of more eco-friendly houses, Margarido House is the first custom home in the nation to be LEED-H Platinum certified and GreenPoint Rated. Completed in 2009, this Oakland, California home by McDonald Construction & Development, Inc. is also the first in Northern California to receive LEED-H Platinum Certification. The Margarido House is 55 percent more energy efficient than California’s Title 24 energy standards. The home features extensive green building components such as eco-friendly Western Red Cedar siding, a planted green roof garden and deck, on-site rain and ground water reclamation, in-floor hydronic heating, and solar electric and solar thermal (hot water) systems. Design elements include polished concrete surfaces, floor to ceiling windows and doors, an abundance of natural light, and the latest in contemporary green appliances, lighting, tile, fixtures, cabinetry and finishes. The Margarido House has become a symbol of the movement in high design, high sustainability, collaboration and community. Over 6,000 designers, architects, builders and homeowners have toured the home to learn about sustainability and high design.
